Hong Kong-based media artist and filmmaker Alan Kwan’s films were awarded and showcased at various film festivals including International Video Art Festival Camaguey, Hong Kong International Film Festival and Hong Kong Independent Short Film and Video Awards (ifva). He was invited to participate in the Asian Producers’ Lab at the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival in Korea in 2011.

His work Bad Trip, currently shown at SCM 7/K11 – Transcendent Ordinariness exhibition, is an immersive virtual reality installation inviting the audience to navigate in the artist’s memory through a game controller. Commenced in November 2011, the project has constructed a mind map of the artist whose daily life was recorded by the mechanic gaze of a video camera mounted on his glasses. Virtual immersion is staged at a landscape built on a database of the artist’s memory where changes of cognitive topography take place with the artist’s empirical experience.

In this workshop, Alan will share his creative journey from experimental filmmaking to avant-garde video game design, and explains his vision of videogame as a possible form of future cinema. Participant will then take part in a hands-on workshop on making 3D game.
