HK’s First O2O Retail Experience for Start-ups to Harness Big Data

How would you like your dream playground if you are given carte blanche for its making – could it be exhilarating? Inspiring or therapeutic? Whatever form it takes, architecture is about place making for the comfort and betterment of everyday life. With this in mind, the 3rd wave of K11’s 10th Anniversary celebration in the Design Month explores future design and architectural aesthetic through K11 ‘FUTURE PLAYSCAPE: The Power of Space’, an avant-garde playground where boundless creativity meets flashes of inspiration in an extraordinary space that defies common sense.

In the campaign, K11 joins forces with international award-winning starchitect and artist Manfred Yuen to combine socially-minded urban design and artistic flair, transforming chi K11 art space into a whimsical space that projects all the elements of a successful park: nature, risk, solitude, sensory, inclusiveness and socializing. The result is an urban oasis for kids and kidults to have a real play time. What’s more, a stunning array of mini trompe l’oeil games is featured in the art mall to challenge the eyes and mind of hipsters, parents and children as they are prompted to rethink the meaning and possibilities architectural design has. Before the inspiring journey ends, remember to visit The D Project Pop-Up Store to marvel at the creative works by new design forces, and discover future retail trends in the O2O  Designer  Manufacturer – New Retail Experience by Hong Kong O2O E-Commerce Federation at the Atrium.

K11 ‘FUTURE PLAYSCAPE: The Power of Space’

Date: 13th September – 31st October
Venue: K11
3,000 sq ft ‘FAIRYLAND PLAYSCAPE’ by International Architect

The 2018 Design Month at K11 is headlined by the future of architecture and design with fun, innovative and adventurous elements to stimulate reflections on design as a force for better and more comfortable living through a tangible experience of the life-enriching attributes of architecture and design. Under the collaboration between K11 and international award-winning starchitect Manfred Yuen, chi K11 art space is transformed into a ‘FAIRYLAND PLAYSCAPE’ with an exhilarating touch of futurism that challenges the public’s conventional perception of ‘playground’. In addition to a space for visitors to have fun and meet new friends, the exhibition sheds light on the future potential of the act of playing itself, in which imagination, inspiration and healing power work in concert to liberate man from daily grind.

Drawing inspiration from the ethereal Jade Mountain in ancient Chinese legend, the ‘FAIRYLAND PLAYSCAPE’ combines practical architecture and design aesthetic with a sense of community to create an extraordinary realm featuring black and white trompe l’oeil elements under various lighting effects in the bustling chi K11 art space. The exhibition begins with a trompe l’oeil tunnel that leads to the unknown world of undulating black-and-white optical illusions. Visitors can remote control the direction of the ‘clouds’ floating above and be immersed in a world unto themselves surrounded by the specially composed soundtrack by fashion designer and musician Eugene Leung.

A force to be reckoned with in architecture, Manfred Yuen studied architecture at the University of Cambridge and the University of Hong Kong (with First Class Honour). He was a lecturer at the Department of Architecture at Kingston University London in the United Kingdom. In 2010, he was named one of the 45 architects under the age of 40 in ‘The Next Generation Architects, Backstage Architecture, Italy’ award, and went on in 2011 to receive the ’40-under-40 – Design Talents/Asia’ (Architecture and Interior Design) accolade. His works have been exhibited worldwide, including London, Italy, China, Singapore and Hong Kong.
